Gerhard Quartet: In Memory of Beauty
Spanish string quartet Gerhard debuts at the Concertgebouw with a reflection on beauty.
The Spanish Gerhard Quartet will perform at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on Wednesday, May 22 as part of their European tour featuring the program In Memory of Beauty. This program contemplates the contrasting forces shaping history: creation and destruction.
In Memory of Beauty connects ancient and contemporary elements, tradition and modernism, by pairing Bach’s Kunst der Fuge with Shostakovich’s 8th String Quartet, an emblematic work dedicated to the victims of fascism and war. After this piece, the concert continues with Tchaikovsky’s 1st String Quartet as a hymn to hope.
After Amsterdam, the Gerhard Quartet will perform at the Concertgebouw in Bruges on May 24, 2024, and subsequently also in cities such as Turin and Prague. Before that, the quartet will perform in Madrid, Vila-seca and Girona, among other places.
