Jaume Plensa and Cristobal Gabarron in ARTZUID 2025

The 9th edition of the Amsterdam Sculpture Biennial “ARTZUID” celebrates the Enlightenment with international and Spanish artists.

ARTZUID, the prestigious Biennial of Outdoor Sculpture in Amsterdam, presents this summer an exhibition entitled Enlightenment, which celebrates the city’s 750th anniversary with a tribute to its values of freedom, tolerance and progress.

Among the more than 70 international artists participating, two Spanish figures stand out: Jaume Plensa, with his work Yolandita (2024), and Cristobal Gabarron, whose installation Atlanta Star – An Olympic Forest (1995-1996) is a group of 26 sculptures evoking the Olympic memory and the spirit of sport. His pieces dialogue with other great figures of contemporary art and are integrated into the green and urban environment of the Amsterdam-South neighborhood.

Jaume Plensa is known worldwide for his sculptural language that combines the figurative with the conceptual, exploring universal themes such as identity and communication. For his part, Cristobal Gabarron brings a vision full of symbolism and narrative through his work, which forms a fundamental part of the artistic landscape of ARTZUID 2025.

This edition, curated by historian Ralph Keuning, brings together artists such as Ai Weiwei, Tony Cragg or Magdalena Abakanowicz and explores the balance between progress, history and coexistence in the city. The exhibition invites to reflect on history and social contradictions from a plural and open perspective.
